Bentonite waterproof blankets are a type of geosynthetic material specifically used for waterproofing artificial lakes, landscape water features, landfills, underground garages, rooftop gardens, pools, oil depots, and chemical storage yards. They are made by filling high-quality sodium-based bentonite between composite geotextiles and non-woven fabrics. Bentonite waterproof mats feature many small fiber spaces that prevent bentonite particles from flowing in one direction. When exposed to water, a uniform, high-density gel-like waterproof layer forms within the mat, effectively preventing water leakage. Bentonite waterproof blankets can be classified according to their manufacturing process into: sodium-based bentonite waterproof blanket, film-covered sodium-based bentonite waterproof blanket, and adhesive-type sodium-based bentonite waterproof blanket. The film-covered sodium-based bentonite waterproof blanket has a high-density polymer geomembrane laminated on the outer surface of the non-woven geotextile layer of the sodium-based bentonite mat. Performance features:Density — Sodium-based bentonite forms a high-density diaphragm under water pressure. When the thickness is about 3mm, its water permeability is less than 1×10ˉ11 m/sec, which is equivalent to 100 times the compactness of 30cm thick clay and exhibits strong self-water retention ability.Durable waterproofing — Since sodium-based bentonite is a natural inorganic material, it does not age or corrode over time or due to environmental changes, ensuring long-lasting waterproof performance.Easy construction and short construction period — Compared to other waterproof materials, the construction of bentonite blankets is relatively simple, requiring no heating or adhesives. They can be connected and fixed using bentonite powder, nails, and washers. Post-construction inspections are not required, and any waterproof deficiencies are easy to address.Unaffected by temperature — The material does not become brittle under cold climate conditions.Integration — The waterproof material integrates with the structure: When sodium-based bentonite encounters water, it can expand 20–28 times. Even if the concrete structure experiences vibration or settlement, the bentonite within the GCL can self-repair cracks up to 2mm in the concrete surface.Environmentally friendly — Bentonite is a natural inorganic material, harmless to humans, with no other adverse effects, making it eco-friendly.High cost-performance ratio and very versatile — The product width can reach up to 6 meters, greatly improving construction efficiency.Applicable scope and conditions: Suitable for municipal (landfill), water conservancy, environmental protection, artificial lakes, and underground waterproof and anti-seepage projects. It can be installed in subzero temperatures (-20°C) where other waterproof materials cannot; it can also be applied on dry bases without standing water. Rain or snow weather prevents installation. It is unsuitable for strong acid or alkali solutions. Being an inorganic material, its durability is better than organic waterproof materials.
